This was taken near the corner of 24th and Folsom, in the Mission District of San Francisco.

In early November 2015, I flew from New York to San Francisco to take a weekend street-photography workshop under the tutelage of Eric Kim. As you might expect, I took gazillions of photos; but not all of them were specifically associated with the workshop itself. On the way out to San Francisco, I took a bunch of pictures with my iPhone; and during the weekend, I took a number of photos that had little or nothing to do with street-photography per se.
I’ll upload the photos in dribs and drabs during the next several days, and let you decide which ones are sufficiently interesting to warrant a second look…
Excellent capture
Hi,the poor resolution and high ISO is not understood me. What happened? rgds thomas

[https://www.flickr.com/photos/rippchenmitkraut66] I’m not sure exactly what happened, but I can tell you some of the factors that may have influenced the outcome: for street-photography situations like this, I normally use a semi-manual setting on my camera that allows me to fix the shutter speed and aperture; the camera then adjusts the ISO automatically in order to create the best overall exposure that it can do. I also let the camera auto-focus automatically, as these pictures are usually taken fairly quickly…
Normally a shutter speed of 1/200 is okay, and an aperture of f/5.6 is sufficient. And normally the camera is pretty good about focusing on the correct subject. But things can go wrong … in this case, for example, I think the camera actually focused on the man in the foreground, and the aperture setting was not sufficient to ensure that the two women were well-focused.
In addition, they were moving (walking towards me) and I was moving (walking towards them), so a shutter speed of 1/200 was probably not sufficient. Ideally, I should have been shooting at 1/500 and f/8.0 … but even then, the camera might have focused too much on the man in the foreground.
Also, as you might be able to tell from the picture, all of this was on the shady side of the street: while there was bright sunlight a block or two further south, the trees prevented the sun from hitting the area where I was walking. So the camera automatically adjusted for all of this by raising the ISO up to 6,400 (and I’ve now adjusted the camera to allow it to go all the way up to 12,800; the Sony A7 II camera that I sometimes use can go up to 27,600). Even so, the final photo may have been underexposed…
Because of the high ISO, the resulting image was fairly "noisy," and I’m pretty sure that I used the NoiseNinja plug-in to "smooth" some of the rough edges …
So the overall result was not very good, from a technical perspective. I certainly agree with you on that one! Perhaps I should not have uploaded the image to Flickr at all, but I thought the woman’s red pants were quite dramatic (which is what prompted me to take the photo in the first place), and I also liked the two men in the foreground and background …
I don’t know if that’s an adequate explanation, overall, but that’s what was going on.
